I found out some great news yesterday--my friend Melissa Dickenson is a finalist for the 2008 Janet and Walter Sondheim Prize exhibition and her work will be on display at the Baltimore Museum of Art through August!
Melissa recently participated in an artist's residency at a factory in Japan, where she studied the papermaking process Awa Washi and produced a delicate, painterly body of work that reflects her concern for the environment.
I have always been enamored with the flora and fauna characters in Melissa's work--she has an elaborate imagination that is untouched by cynicism and her inventive creatures are not over-stylized or cartoonish. I look forward to seeing the latest iteration of her work. I caught her Imaginary Oceans show at the Shine Collective in March and was excited to see her introduce some hand sewing in some of the pieces.
The opening for the exhibition is Saturday, July 12th from 6-9pm at the BMA. The winner of the Sondheim prize will be announced in a special ceremony that night, so don't miss the excitement!
**UPDATE**
You need to RSVP by Tuesday, July 8th in order to attend the opening. Please contact Margo Wright at 410.752.8632 or mwright@promotionandarts.com.
