Today's post is dedicated to inspiring local news:
First we have local illustration studio SPUR Design featured in design*sponge's "sneak peaks" blog entry. I found the post through the blog at HOW Magazine, which salutes Dave Plunkert for illustrating one of its covers in 2005. Their home is spectacular and the design is based on Joyce Hesselberth's desire to live in a tree house. I love the Navy side chairs, concrete block walls, and gorgeous upright piano.
My friend Kristin Grey is the superintendent at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, which was written up in the Sun this weekend by architecture critic Ed Gunts. This glorious building shares one thing in common with the house built for the owners of SPUR Design: it was designed by the architecture firm Schamu Machowski Greco (SMG). Definitely take time to read about the different tenants in the building, but make sure you check out the pictures. At the end of the slide show is a photo featuring my friend Kristin. Incidentally, she is a fabulous ceramic artist and her work can be viewed here. I am a big fan of her "kitsch" line.
I regularly read the Baltimore Etsy Street Team blog, and was excited to see that Towson University professor/jeweler extraordinaire Jan Baum is curating a metalsmithing exhibit at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art. The opening is this Friday, June 6th from 6-8pm and the show is on view until July 31st. I won't be able to attend the opening this Friday but I will definitely see the exhibit before it closes. I own a piece of jewelry by Beth Pohlman, whose work is featured in the photograph to the left. She is one of the participating artists in this show--others to note are Jenn Parnell, Megan Auman, and April Wood. I have followed Jenn Parnell's work for a few years now, and I recently had the pleasure of meeting her and Megan Auman at February's American Craft Council show. They are both deeply talented and I can't wait to see their work!
Last but not least, we have news that Havre de Grace and Annapolis have been designated as arts and entertainment districts. The Baltimore Business Journal reports that the Maryland State Arts Council added these two cities to the list last week, which leaves the total number of A&E districts in Maryland at seventeen! I was in Havre de Grace this Sunday and took this photo of the light house. I'm sure it's the same photo that every other tourist has taken, but at least you can see one of the city's claims to fame. If you go, check out the Tidewater Grille. They have great tilapia dishes!
